EOTAS

What is EOTAS?

EOTAS stands for Education Other Than At School. It is a form of alternative education in the UK provided to children and young people who cannot attend mainstream or special schools due to various reasons. This might include:

  • Behavioural difficulties

  • Special educational needs (SEN)

  • Medical conditions (physical or mental health issues)

  • Exclusion from school

EOTAS is tailored to meet the individual educational needs of the student. It can include:

  • Tutoring at home

  • Online learning programs

  • Specialist therapy sessions

  • Community-based learning

Local Authorities arrange EOTAS when a child’s needs cannot be met in traditional school settings, ensuring they still receive a suitable and effective education

Specialist Therapeutic Support for EOTAS

bMindful Psychology recognises that supporting EOTAS through therapeutic interventions can have significant positive impacts on a child's educational and personal development. These interventions address the underlying emotional, psychological, and behavioural challenges that prevent a child from thriving in a traditional school setting. In negation with local authorities and parents/carers we can create a bespoke therapeutic package for the young person.

What we offer

  • Ongoing 1-to-1 sessions with a clinician each week and psychological assessment formulation and termly review of progress which can inform family support and annual reviews, supervised by a psychologist

  • bMindful can offer support to EOTAS with Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language and Creative Psychotherapy depending on the Child/Young Person's needs.

The goal of this work is to:

  • Support the child/young person to overcome emotional barriers to education, increase independence and access to community activity at their pace.

  • Contribute to reviews and provide well informed and child centred support and advice for parents/carers and other people involved in child/young person’s EOTAS

  • Support Local Authorities to understand the needs of children/young people in receipt of an EOTAS and measure the progress of the child/young person accessing an EOTAS package

Our EOTAS work is coordinated and supported by Dr Louise Knox who is a specialist Educational Psychologist who, in collaboration with the University of Manchester, has contributed to academic research of relevance to children and young people experiencing anxieties and barriers to traditional schooling, and has experience in the area of EOTAS.
