What is a child ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is not a single test. It is a full check-up of a child’s behaviour, attention, and emotions to see if ADHD might explain the challenges they are having at home, at school, or with friends.

Why will a young person have an assessment?

It helps answer questions like:

  • Why does my child struggle to concentrate, sit still, or control impulses?

  • Are these behaviours typical for their age, or something more?

  • What support does my child need to succeed?

Characteristics of ADHD usually start before the age of 12 and relates to how a child, or young person, experiences attention, energy levels and impulse control. These differences can shape how they engage with the world around them.

A child or young person may experience attention differently:

They might:

  • be drawn to many things happening around them

  • find it easier to focus on things that feel interesting or meaningful

  • need support to follow multi-step instructions

  • forget everyday routines, like brushing their teeth or putting on socks, especially when overwhelmed or distracted

Have naturally high energy levels:

They may:

  • prefer to move lots, fidget or tap their hands and feet to help regulate their focus

  • prefer active engagement rather than long periods of sitting still

  • express themselves in lively or enthusiastic ways

Respond quickly or spontaneously:

They might:

  • speak before fully processing their thoughts

  • find waiting or turn taking challenging

  • join conversations with enthusiasm

Most children and young people with ADHD have traits of both the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive type. Some only show signs of one type.

Many children experience a mix of these traits, while others may lean more towards differences in attention or energy.

Rather than being something to “fix”, these differences are part of how a child’s brain works and with understanding and support, they can thrive.
